An Indian Rain Tree (koelreuteria paniculata), a Monkey Puzzle Tree (araucaria araucana), and a Judas Tree (cercis siliquastrum) were planted in the English Gardens, adjacent to the Avenue Gardens, where Al Fresco is held each summer. Tree Planting 2001 In 2001, Kele had the honour of planting a tree in Regent's Park, one of the ten trees that were being planted with Al Fresco donations that year. Kele Baker planted a white ash sapling (Fraxinus americana 'Autumn Applause'). These trees formed part of the park's Autumn Tree Trail along the north side of the park from the mosque to the zoo and around the canal. Attending the tree planting were Park Manager David Caselton, assistant park managers, and the secretary and Fredi Newton, assistant secretary of The Prince of Wales' Royal Parks Tree Appeal. During the planting, Mr. Caselton explained that the north of the park had been a dumping ground for rubble from WWII bombing of Camden Town. When park staff prepare for tree planting in this region of the park, they encounter this rubble as they dig. The trees themselves wind their roots through this rubble as they grow and mature. 10 Downing Street Reception In 2007, Dance Al Fresco organiser Kele Baker attended a reception at 10 Downing Street in honour of the 4th anniversary of The Royal Parks Foundation. Kele met the Cherie Booth QC (Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife), who graciously greeted and spoke with the thirty guests. Speeches were given by Cherie Booth QC and Royal Parks Foundation director Peter Ellwood. Afterwards, the guests were invited to view the state rooms and gardens. |
